Spain woke up Tuesday morning to one of the biggest political bombshells in recent memory: former Prime Minister José Luis RodrÃguez Zapatero is officially under investigation in a corruption probe linked to the controversial €53 million government bailout granted to the airline Plus Ultra during the pandemic.
According to the National Court, investigators are looking into possible influence peddling, document falsification, and alleged participation in a criminal organization connected to the suspected laundering of Venezuelan funds in Europe. It is the first time in Spain’s democratic history that a former prime minister has been investigated in a corruption case.
