Yesterday, a woman was sexually assaulted in the heart of Palermo Hollywood as she left a TV studio at the intersection of Ravignani and Cabrera. Because that woman, Cinthia Fernández, is fairly famous, the incident has received a lot of media attention. What’s also earned the spotlight, however, is one particular television host’s archaic response to the incident.

This morning, while interviewing the chief of security at the production studio outside of which the assault took place, TV talk show Infama guest Luis Ventura, a journalist, asked the guard what Fernández had been wearing at the time of the attack.

The remark has, unsurprisingly, caused outrage on social media. The question implicitly suggests that Fernández’s choice of dress could have warranted or caused the attack. Today, she told press that she hopes Ventura will retract his comment and condemned it for being machista and ignorant.

Other viewers took to Twitter to vent their anger against Ventura’s absurd comments:

“Luis Ventura asked what Cinthia Fernández was wearing? That makes me want to shoot him in the head.”

The actual assault occurred at around 1:20 PM yesterday afternoon as Fernández was leaving Endemol’s studios, having just finished presenting her weekday spot as a panelist on TV show La mesa está lista. Speaking to Clarín, Fernández described the encounter: “I had left the studio and I was getting into my car when the man approached me. He threw himself on top of me; he had his trousers down and began rubbing himself against me.”

It has since been announced that a 39-year-old man was arrested. He has been described to be suffering from mental health problems.

Ventura has not apologized for or retracted his comment.
