What To Do In Buenos Aires This Weekend June 17 Edition

It’s finally here! The magical four-day weekend we’ve all been waiting for. If you’re not off gallivanting somewhere outside the city limits, there is plenty to do around town to celebrate your extra time off.

Friday 17th

MASTERCLASS: Unleash your inner artist. Jorge La Feria will impart his wisdom about audiovisual as a medium in contemporary art. He’ll highlight artists such as Albertina Carri, Marcel Broodthaers, Andrés Denegri, Gilad Ratman, etc. – all of whom have had recently had expositions at the MACBA The class is free as long as you register beforehand to: [email protected] (email). 3:00 PM at the MACBA (San Juan 328)

CONVOCATION: 40 years of Memories hopes to memorialize the last dictatorship in Argentina with presentations of personal stories from those who lived through it, poems, illustrations, and photographs. Join in solidarity at 12:00 PM at the Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos (Av. del Libertador 8151). The event is free.

MUSIC: Looking for a chill start to the weekend? Listen to some Radiohead, get your copy of “Live from a Moon Shaped Pool,” and enter your name into the drawing for some cool prizes. Music will start at around 12:00 PM at Zivals (Callao 395) and the event will last until 7:00 PM. Free.

MUSIC: Do you feel like rock hit its prime in the 60’s? These guys do to: Nube 9, Litto Nebbia  and Los Reyes del Falsete will join forces to bring you the hits from 1966 including tunes from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Supremes, Temptations, Beach Boys, Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and more! 9:00 PM at La Usina del Arte (Caffarena 1). MUSIC: If you’re in a jazzier mood, Konex will have its Jazz Jam session. Brush off your improv skills, or just enjoy everyone else’s. Tickets are ARS 130 and can be purchased here. Ciudad Cultural Konex (Sarmiento 3131) 11:59 PM

MOVIE: Pink Flamingos. With a pitch like ‘A bizarre fat woman (Divine) and her misfit family compete with a Baltimore couple (David Lochary, Mink Stole) to be named the filthiest people alive,’ how can you not go? At the MALBA (Figueroa Alcorta 3415) 11:59 PM. Tickets are ARS 55 or ARS 28 for students and retirees.

PARTY: Feel like Beyonce at Bahrein’s Lemonade party. Ladies get in free until 2:00 AM and guys only pay ARS 100. The party starts at 11:55 PM. Bahrein Bar (Lavalle 345)

Saturday 18th


ZUMBA: Kickstart your Saturday! Learn from the creator himself: Beto Perez gives a huge masterclass at the Pabellón Azul, La Rural. Tickets can be purchased here. 11:00 AM La Rural (Sarmiento 2704).

REVOLUTION: If the tremendous distance between Buenos Aires and Seoul have you feeling like you’re missing out on all the good KPOP, never fear! KPOP revolution is here. The festivities celebrating this music phenomenon start at 11:00 AM at the Colegio San Jose and include music, food, and vendors. Get your fix until 7:00 PM. Tickets are ARS 45 if you purchase in advance or ARS 60 at the door. Colegio San Jose (Azcuenaga 158).

FESTIVAL: Mantrafest invites you to celebrate the culture of India. Come for a free evening of dance, music, and food at the Valletiera Yoga Studio (Costa Rica 4562) 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

LECTURE: Before you get your zen on, brush up on your Digital Culture savvy with HUB Talks by Mariana Varela, Guillermo Pareja, Franco Pellegrini, and Jessica Hemingway. They’ll be helping you make the most of digital media at the Cultural San Martin (Sarmiento 1551) from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM. The event is totally free, but you have to register here beforehand.

WORKSHOP: If listening to lectures is a bit too static of a Saturday afternoon activity for you, there is an Expressive Movement workshop that will likely be right up your alley. The journey starts at 3:00 PM at the MUtA Espacio En Movimiento (Chile 1830). Send an email to [email protected] to sign up. Donations are accepted, but there is no charge.

MUSIC: Tango alert! The Orquesta del Tango de Buenos Aires will be paying tribute to Horacio Salgán (one of tango’s greatest), who was born 100 years ago. His son, César Salgán heads up the orchestra as they play some of his greatest hits. The show is free at 9:00 PM at La Usina del Arte (Caffarena 1).

FOOD: Don’t let the land of steak leave you feeling left out. Vegan night is here to celebrate the plant lovers in all of us. Club Seitán hosts a Noche Porteña, but sans steak. The evening starts at 9:00 PM and promises to last all night. Tickets are only ARS 35 and can be purchased at the door. Club Seitán (Dr Tomás Manuel de Anchorena 575)

PARTY: Birthday! Bomba is celebrating its 10th birthday party and wants you to join in the festivities. Dance the night away starting at 11:59 PM. Tickets are ARS 130 and can be purchased here. Ciudad Cultural Konex (Sarmiento 3131)

Sunday 18th


EXPO: Bonsai Winter Festival. Smaller is better? Come see the tiny trees at the Japanese garden from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM and explore everything else these gorgeous gardens have to offer. Tickets are ARS 70. Jardín Japonés (Casares 2966).

FESTIVAL: EcoBaires connects designers, artists and entrepreneurs who are interested in working towards sustainability. The festival boasts local products, food, and music. Get your eco-friendly on from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Galpón Milagros (Gorriti 5417). Free!

FESTIVAL: Winter Solstice! Whether you’re a fan of the cold short days or not, celebrate its coming or its passing by planting a tree! There will also be mate and meals to share. Join the fun at the Ciudad Universitaria of the UBA from 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Intendente Güiraldes 2160).Free.

MUSIC: Double dose of jazz at La Usina. Big band is alive and well in Buenos Aires! Come see Artistry Big Band and singers Julia Moscardini, Verónica Sala, and Mariana Iturre. La Usina delivers once again with what promises to be a toe-tappin’ event. The show is free and starts at 7:00 PM (Caffarena 1).

PARTY: On a Sunday night? Duh! Take advantage of your Monday off with the Undertones and Alejandro Paz. There will be DJ’s to keep you moving all night long. Tickets are ARS 150 in advance and can be purchased here. Niceto Club (Niceto Vega 5510)

PARTY: If one party isn’t enough for you, get to Fiesta PLOP! They will be paying homage to Bandana (I KNOW you remember Bandana…). Close your eyes and pretend like it’s the early 2000’s, you don’t have to wake up early on Monday anyway! 11:55 PM at Vorterix (Federico Lacroze 3455). Tickets are ARS 180 and can be purchased here.
