What To Do In Buenos Aires This Weekend, January 6th Edition

Now that we’ve successfully put the anomalous 2016 behind us, it’s time to move forward with yet another festive weekend. The kings are coming! Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar are all en route to mess with your footwear, and are bringing with them an unreasonable dose of excitement for children across the country. Once you’ve gorged on your mom’s (or panadería’s) rosca, and have reviewed all of the footage of Careytastrophe 2016, get out into the sweaty Buenos Aires heat for one last hurrah this holiday season. Your resolutions can wait another week, or better yet, another year.

Friday, January 6th

A new year calls for a wardrobe makeover, and Punctum Photos wants you to be able to answer that call on the cheap. Their Feria de Moda is taking their studio from gallery to fashion hub, and you can score unique finds there for as little as AR $50 per item. Head on over to Caballito for both new and vintage pieces, and don’t forget to notice the art on the wall as you shop to your heart’s content. There will be music, and more importantly, air conditioning, so your experience will be as comfortable as can be. There’s no charge to get in, but make sure you secure your spot by sending a message here.

Punctum Photos | Gral. Martín de Gainza and Av. Rivadavia | 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM

We’re definitely in the thick of summer, and La Veraniega is back to take full advantage of the weather situation. They’re setting up shop at the Club Arquitectura to kick off their season of outdoor classes and milongas. Practice your ability to destroy personal space with a class by Eduardo Pareja and Laura Grandi, and stick around for the milonga with music by Bien Pulenta. There will also be plenty of food to prevent any hint of an anemic abrazo. Tickets for the whole enchilada are AR $120 (AR $90 to just dance), and you can get yours at the door.

Club Arquitectura | Av. Francisco Beiró 2116 | 8:30 PM – 3:00 AM

Holidays got you down? Get your Blues fix at the Tabaco Pub with the first Jam de Blues of 2017. If you’ve got an instrument lying around and some chops to show off, you’re more than welcome to join the performers with either Blues, R&B, Funk, or any combination thereof. Otherwise, sit back, relax, and enjoy the melancholy. Organizers, 1 4 5 Blues Band will be jamming right alongside attendees, and you can check out their style here. There’s no charge to get in, so just show up to rub elbows with your fellow San Telmo musicians.

Tabaco Pub | Estados Unidos 265 | 9:00 PM

obra de dios

Humberto Tortonese knows funny, which is probably why he agreed to star in the Spanish version of An Act of God. Obra de Dios will star the Martín Fierro award winning comedian as God, alongside Roberto Pelosi and Agustín Corsi. Adapted by Elio Marchi, the David Jaberbaum play actually started out as a series of tweets, so you should be right at home if your attention span is slightly stunted. Tickets for your ticket to see the man himself start at AR $200 and you can get yours in advance here.

Teatro Maipo | Esmeralda 443 | 9:00 PM

La Trocha is on a mission to entertain, and they’ve got the perfect recipe to crack your stony facade with Variete La Trocha. Hosted by the Espacio Cultural Dinamo and MC’d by Fragancia and Chumi, your variety show experience promises to combine comedy, art, music, and lively company for a catch-all event. You’ll also have full access to all of the fabulous amenities that Dinamo has to offer including a full bar, homemade treats, and the opportunity to school your frenemies on the ping-pong court. Tickets are a la gorra, and all you have to do to participate is show up.

Espacio Cultural Dinamo | Sarmiento 3096 | 10:30 PM – 2:30 AM

You may not associate Funk and Soul with Costa Rica, but once you hear Déborah Dixon, the two may show up together in your lexicon a little more often. She’ll be belting out your favorite hits at the Bebop club alongside La Fundación de Funk for a smooth transition into 2017. Dixon has called Argentina home since 1984, and made a name for herself here as the frontwoman for Las Blacanblus before venturing out on her own. You can catch a sneak peak of her latest collaboration with La Fundación here before getting your AR $250 tickets to funkytown.

Bebop Club | Moreno 364 | 11:50 PM – 2:00 AM

ciclo sin tierra

Ciclo Sin Tierra is coming at you with another happy meeting of music and art. Join them at the Espacio Cultural Mi Casa for a night with bands Riel, Rodrigo Armando, Esquizofrenicos, and Los Playas Grande, along with a Matias Diaz exhibit, and a cassette fair (if you were unlucky enough to be born after the nineties, this is what a cassette is). You can hang with the bands in the cultural hotspot for only AR $50, and take advantage of all the goodies the center has to offer. No need to sign up beforehand, so just show up to satisfy your senses.

Espacio Cultural Mi Casa |  Agüero 787 | 11:00 PM – 4:00 AM

Vox is here to ease your transition back to real life with an epic lineup that will keep you moving all night long. They’ve got not one, but two floors set up to provide you with the options you deserve, and are dishing out everything from techno to psytrance. Check out the Facebook event to stalk the DJs on deck, and add your name to the discussion section to make sure you’re on the list. Tickets will run you AR $80 before 1:00 AM, AR $100 before 2:00 AM, AR $120 afterwards, and you can get yours at the door.

What could possibly make your half-naked dance party even better? ICE CREAM. That’s right, there will be free ice cream for all you party people (while supplies last). How can you get in on this perfect storm? Send a message via the Facebook page to get your name on the list, and show up with AR $80 in your pocket. The first 200 people to arrive get in free, so don’t be late.

You’ve still got plenty of time to see the mega exhibit, in case you missed the opening in mid-December among the holiday festivities. Curator Rodrigo Alonso’s idea behind Mundos Imaginarios, is simply to bring together works by more than 25 artists that give a little insight into the imaginary worlds locked in their authors’ minds. sin pantalones

Or lack thereof… If you’re looking for a way to show off your gams, and have always wanted to participate in a flash mob, this one’s for you. Subte Sin Pantalones is back and recruiting with the following caveats: you have to be willing to de-pants in public, and you have to be able to keep a straight face while doing it. If you’re curious as to what this might look like, you can check out last year’s version here. There’s no charge to participate, and you can find all the info you need to be a part of something bigger than yourself on the Facebook event page.

Plaza de Mayo | Av. Rivadavia and Bolívar | 3:00 PM

If you’re in the Lomas del Mirador area, and you haven’t checked out the El Camino Bar Cultural yet, tonight’s the night. They’re hosting an epic beginning of the year party for anyone who’s excited to start fresh. Jams & Zapadas Libres your chance to bust out the instrument collecting dust in the back of your closet and jam out with perfect strangers, or sit back and let the music happen to you. There’s also a killer list of bands who’ve promised to play along, food, drinks, and contests, to keep the inevitable depression caused by an impending Monday at bay. There’s no charge to get in and no need to sign up beforehand.

El Camino Bar Cultural | Av. Juan Manuel de Rosas 399 | 7:00 PM

Happy weekend y’all!
