This is starting to get old guys. The new FIFA World Ranking was released today and shows Argentina triumphantly staying in the number one slot. But, on the negative side, Brazil climbed five places to now sit fourth in the global ranking.
Argentina has managed to stay in the number one slot even though it can’t seem to catch a break in finals, including coming out behind Chile on penalties in Copa América, the country has managed to stay in the top slot. In the recent Russia World Cup qualifying matches, Bauzo’s squad managed to gain 4 points. They beat Uruguay 1-0 and drew 2-2 agaisnt Venezuela. This has helped solidify Argentina’s slot in first place with 1,646 points compared to 1,369 for second-placed Belgium.
A few months ago it looked as if Argentinian football had gone into complete meltdown. Argentina stood without a President of the Argentinian Football Association (AFA), a senior coach, or a captain.
However the last months have seen swift and positive turn-around for Argentinian football. Messi returned from a brief but worrying international retirement, stating that, “There are many things that need to be fixed in Argentine football. But I prefer to help from inside rather than stand on the outside and criticise.” Plus, we saw the arrival of new coach Edgardo ‘Big-Foot’ Bauza, who has a strong track record of six titles to his name, and is the only coach to win the Libertadores Cup, with two teams from two different countries.
With their next big game against Peru in October, here’s to hoping the lead over Belgium continues to widen.
