April was an intense month for food events, with every week bringing a new reason for why I can no longer fit into my jeans. Just when I breathed a sigh of relief and settled in for some healthy eating, Fiesta del Café burst into my life with a whole new range of temptations.
This is Buenos Aires’ first-ever edition of the event and shows that the days of struggling to find decent coffee in the city are well and truly over. Taking place in the luxurious surroundings of the Alvear Icon Hotel in Puerto Madero, this event is a celebration of the world’s favorite brew and aims to allow visitors to experience coffee “in all its dimensions,” cryptic as that sounds.
While coffee has long been a part of our day-to-day lives, from a café con leche with breakfast to a cafecito after a large meal, experimentation with the beverage is currently reaching new heights. Coffee is now being used in bars and kitchens, with chefs finding new and innovative ways to marry food and drink to celebrate coffee’s unique flavor.
La Fiesta del Café will be an opportunity to experience coffee in all its forms, from the most straightforward to the most original. It will be fused with mixology, patisserie, food trucks, art, music, gastronomy, DJs, and VJs (Video Jockeys, for the uninitiated). The mind boggles at how some of these things can be combined (coffee and DJs, really?), so all the more reason to go along and see what it’s all about.
There will be a veritable smorgasbord of coffee-related products on display: espressos, cocktails, filter coffees, coffee-based drinks, home appliances, food and drinks married with coffee, solutions for enjoying it at work, and flavored coffees. I can feel the caffeine shakes coming on already.
The exhibitors are some of the big players of the coffee and alcohol industries, including Campari, Illy, Tía María, Macchiato, Café Fundador, Cabrales, Puerto Blest, Tienda del Barista, Bonini, Ascaso, Rocket, Nestlé Milano, Motofeca, Cremma, Compañía de Chocolate, ISEGH, and San Pellegrino.
If you still feel like you haven’t had enough caffeine by this point, the Hotel is getting in on the act, providing enough coffee to finally tip you over the edge. Their wood-paneled Wine Bar will have a special menu and you can sip coffee-themed libations while enjoying panoramic views of Buenos Aires from their Crystal Bar. Rude not to, really.
