Unless you’ve been living under your room’s gas heater, you’ll know the one and only Lionel Messi announced that he will no longer be playing for the Argentine national team, la Selección, after last night’s defeat to Chile in the Copa América final.

Fans were quick to take to Twitter to express their sorrow and try to convince him otherwise. The hashtag #NoTeVayasLio (Don’t Leave, Lio) became a Trending Topic on Twitter late last night in support of the best player in the world, and many similar hashtags followed.

People are holding out a thread of hope that he made the decision in haste after the upsetting loss and that he will have time to think about it more and return:

“Wow, what a sad image…Nobody knows what they have until it’s gone.”

“It’s impossible that the best player in the world not play on the national team. Rest, think about it and then return!”

“It hurts more knowing that Lio can leave us than to have lost the cup. I swear.”

“[It’s better to] lose one thousand times with you than play once without you.”

And of course, cue the trolls…

“Last minute, Bolivia now has a sea.”
