Giovanni Simeone netted twice in Argentina U20’s 3-0 win over Bolivia to send his team through to the second phase. Diego Simeone’s son, the latest in a long line of Argentine attacking prodigies, killed any chance of a shock Bolivia win within 12 minutes with an impressive quick-fire double.
Recent Villarreal signing Leonardo Suárez was the architect of all three goals, laying the ball on a plate for Simeone to tap home on five minutes. Dictating play from his advanced midfield role, Suárez set up the second seven minutes later and Simeone obliged with another poacher’s finish.
With the result certain, manager Humberto Grondona withdrew the number nine to keep him fresh for the games ahead.
Left back Facundo Cardozo stretched the lead to three 20 minutes from time, nodding in a whipped Suárez free kick.
La selección will now travel to Montevideo for the second batch of games, hoping to secure spots at the 2015 U20 World Cup in New Zealand and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
