Swiss officials this morning announced the opening of a criminal investigation into FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
The Swiss Attorney General’s Office is investigating Blatter on “suspicion of criminal mismanagement as well as – alternatively – on suspicion of misappropriation.” In other words, doing things with money he probably shouldn’t have been doing.
Officials searched Blatter’s office and he is being questioned.
The investigation will examine a contract Blatter signed with former President of the Caribbean Football Union Jack Warner who was recently charged with corruption. Blatter is also under fire for a “disloyal payment” (read: shady bonus) of 2 million Swiss francs to Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) president — and Blatter’s potential successor — Michel Platini.
Diego Maradona had spoken out against Blatter in the past, accusing him of lacking any trace of a soul and trying to destroy football as we know it. El pibe de oro also pointed to the passing of the corruption torch from Blatter to Platini, the man most likely to succeed Blatter as FIFA president.
How is Maradona taking the news?
Last we heard, he was alleging that if Jordanian Prince Ali bin Hussein won the FIFA presidential elections next year, he’d be standing “alongside him as vice president.”
Could this be his big break?
