Dengue’s On The Rise And Repellent’s Running Out. But There Are Homemade Solutions

By | [email protected] | January 28, 2016 6:12pm

Now that dengue is a national epidemic and that Zika’s made its way to Argentina, most of us are on the hunt for mosquito repellent. Bad news is that apparently, we’re running out.

Seriously: there have been complaints regarding the lack of insect repellent in pharmacies and stores across six provinces — Buenos Aires, Chaco, Córdoba, Corrientes, Salta and Jujuy. And effectively, reports indicate that the sale of repellent has gone up 60 percent compared to January of last year.

But don’t freak out yet.

To help you out, I’ve done some research of my own and found out that protection doesn’t necessarily have to be bought in a spray bottle. There is in fact a science behind homemade natural remedies, so here are some ways to avoid having the suckers bite you.

Mosquito Attractants (i.e. stuff you should avoid)
  • Floral and fruity fragrances (including hair products and fruity sunscreen)
  • Lactic acids (which appear on your body after a work out or eating highly salty food)
  • Moisture (on your body, on your sheets, in your home, etc.)
  • Dark clothing (mosquitoes are drawn to it)
Recipe For A Small Batch Of Mosquito Repellent (I would suggest doubling it)
  • 10-25 drops (total) of essential oils
  • 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil or alcohol

The essential oils that work well against biting insects (mosquitoes, flies, ticks, fleas) are:

  • cinnamon oil
  • lemon eucalyptus or regular eucalyptus oil
  • citronella oil ***a very good source
  • castor oil

Safe carrier oils and alcohols include:

  • olive oil
  • sunflower oil
  • any other cooking oil
  • witch hazel
  • vodka *** a very good source

*** my personal recommendations

Mixing a few essential oils is also recommended. Don’t forget to frequently re-apply your homemade repellent.

Hopefully the five minutes it took you to read this article will save you from this every time you hit up the local pharmacy when you’re looking for Off:
