The first ever delivery of medicinal cannabis oil arrived in Chubut this week to treat 13 year-old patient Micaela Evans. Micaela suffers Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy for which Cannabis oil is an extremely effective treatment.
The oil was incorporated into the province’s public health scheme in September by Governor Mario Das Neves after a campaign launched by Micaela’s mother. “I am happy to have been able to pave the way for other parents” she said. The few months before the unprecedented legislation was passed the pair had to travel to Buenos Aires and pick up the treatment from customs after it was shipped over from North America.
Micaela’s mother Carola Vera expressed her glee with the treatment that was entirely paid for by her health insurance, “I was worried because I only had a little oil left for Mica when the delivery arrived” she said. Before she began using cannabis oil, Micaela had to take up to 27 pills per day to treat the condition.
The next steps for those who advocate for the use of medicinal cannabis oil is to boost access to more patients.
