Toast and dulce de leche. Fernet and coke. Choripán and chimichurri.
Some pretty iconic Argentine combinations. None, however, that can generate as much nostalgia and pride as the sight of Diego Armando Maradona, El Diez himself, and the 18-karat lump of gold he so famously led the Argentina national team to in Mexico back in 1986.
Recorded during last month’s inaugural ‘Best of FIFA Awards’, the 2-minute feature sees Maradona reunited with the original trophy, and he can barely take his eyes off the thing.
“It’s beautiful… I want to take it home. It’s something I fought for so much… Searched for so much. This is the world. What I have here in my hands is the world. The world plays football. I love it.”
Nice words, but there’s no doubt Argentines will be hoping their current little number 10 does enough to get his hands on it in Russia next summer.
