A thirty year-old man struck and killed 23 year-old French tourist Jonathan Elie Louis Jauneau while driving his Ford Fiesta last night in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo. While the victim died on the scene, the driver – a lawyer identified as Luis Alberto Schenone – fled, but returned two hours later after being persuaded by the friends with whom he was traveling.
The crime occurred yesterday on Avenida del Libertador and Ortiz de Ocampo around 6 AM, where the victim was struck by the vehicle while crossing the street. Among the witnesses were a local doorman, who had witnessed the crash and called the police, and three of the drivers’ friends, who remained on the scene while the driver left and later returned without his vehicle.
After being called to determine the cause of the accident, the Criminology Unit of the Buenos Aires City police began proceedings for homicide. As such, Schenone spent the night detained at the police station in Comuna 12 in the Saavedra neighborhood. According to Infobae, police sources said that the three other passengers that stayed on the scene after the incident until the police arrived were responsible for Schenone’s turning himself in. Police sources commented that Schenone didn’t appear to be under the effect of alcohol or drugs, but medical analysis performed would confirm the hypothesis.
Janeau, who had just arrived the Buenos Aires last Wednesday, was transported to a morgue without the presence of friends or relatives. The authorities have communicated with the French Embassy in Buenos Aires so that his family can be located.
In Argentina, 15 people are killed every day in road accidents, according to the Ministry of Transport. Around 55 percent of the victims are younger than the age of 35; 30 percent of the accidents take place in the Buenos Aires province.
