Fangirls, fanboys, get in formation. Scottish actor, singer, director, and full-on babe Ewan McGregor is in Buenos Aires. Nerds know him from the Star Wars trilogy, hipsters from Trainspotting, and musical theater geeks from Moulin Rouge, among myriad other roles in cinema, theater, and television. McGregor landed in Argentina yesterday alongside director and producer David Alexanian, according to La Nación.
He was spotted in the wild by TN journalist Santiago do Rego, who didn’t hesitate to share the exciting encounter on Twitter:
Hiperventilando.

But why Argentina? Does he have a weird fetish for economic collapse and sociopolitical insanity? Maybe he was just craving a really good steak? Maybe, but the official reason is work related. Both McGregor and Alexanian worked together on Long Way Down and Long Way Round, which focus on the actor’s passion for motorcycles and trips on the open road. In 2004, he took on an international trip with his friend Charley Boorman, traveling from London all the way to New York via central Europe, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, and Canada before making their way to the United States. In total, they rode 19,000 miles on their BMW R1150GS Adventure motorcycles; I wonder how much their butts hurt when they were done. The material from the trip formed the basis of the TV show Long Way Round, which was also a bestselling book.
Three years later, in 2007, the duo teamed up again, riding from Scotland all the way down to South Africa. The trip took nearly three months and was documented in the series Long Way Down; McGregor’s brother Colin and his father Jim joined in on the fun for certain sections of the adventure. Basically, the guy loves motorcycles, if you didn’t pick up on that yet.
OK, but why Argentina? It looks like Ewan and David will head down to the end of the world – literally – in Ushuaia before traveling back up north all the way to Ecuador. This time around, the journey will be Long Way Up (sensing a pattern?); the plans had initially been announced at the beginning of 2019. That’s right, he’ll be living his own Motorcycle Diaries fantasy right here in the Southern Cone.
Ewan is staying at a posh little boutique hotel in Recoleta, in case you feel like getting gussied up and strolling up and down Avenida Quintana in the hopes that you *casually* run into him. Though from the looks of it, he’s more likely to pay attention to you if you’re whizzing down Av. del Libertador in a Harley Davidson.
