The 2019 Copa América kicks off in Brazil this weekend, with the Argentine national football team making its debut on Saturday, June 15th at 7 PM against Colombia. It’s been a hot minute since Argentina claimed an international football title. We all still remember that devastating 2014 World Cup final defeat to Germany like it was yesterday (and the Copa América losses to Chile in 2015 and again in 2016), and most can’t even recall the last time that Argentina won the Copa América (for reference- it was 1993!).

Twelve teams will vie for the title: ten Latin American teams and two additional bids for Qatar (the 2022 World Cup host) and Japan. Brazil is the expected favorite of Group A (Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru) but an ultimate victory for Brazil is no guarantee, given that star-player Neymar recently pulled out amid injury (and rape allegations). In Group C, Uruguay leads the pack (Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, and Chile) and Argentina is the anticipated winner of Group B, but the competition is stiff (Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, and Qatar).

Everyone is hopeful that Lionel Messi (AKA the richest athlete in the world) will help them end their title drought. The Argentine superstar has yet to claim a national title of his own, and may be running out of time (insert collective sigh of despair from all Argentines here). Messi reversed his international retirement in 2016, but the 31-year-old only has so many more appearances left on the world stage. He is only human after all, despite how many times he has made us doubt that.

Messi himself has been a little pessimistic, as he expressed in a recent interview: “We are not candidates like other times. We will go with the same dreams and excitement as always, but the reality is that Argentina is going through a process of change.” Argentina’s roster relies heavily on Messi, so meshing well is pertinent to success. Fans have snubbed manager Lionel Scalioni’s omission of Mauro Icardi from the roster, but the team could find success in other rockstar players like Kun Agüero, Ángel Di María, and Paulo Dybala.

Where to Watch This Weekend

Are you a die-hard Messi fan, who can’t make the five hour flight to Brazil to watch the game? Or perhaps, you’re a more indifferent spectator, who needs food and drink incentives to summon the energy to make it through the match? Opt for one of these 5 options to watch Argentina’s Copa América debut this weekend.

Chicken Bros

For your more “classic American bar” feel, check out Chicken Bros. They’ll be streaming all games with beer promotions, which will change by the match. Food options include everything from wings galore – and a wide variety of sauces to pick from! – as well as other faves like mac n’ cheese, chicken sandwiches and fries and salads. Anytime there’s a major sporting event taking place, Chicken Bros is where you’ll want to be, no matter who you’re cheering for.

Deltoro

Check out one of Deltoro’s three locations to watch the game: Monserrat and Microcentro will be broadcast on TVs with sound; San Telmo will feature the game on a large projector. The happy hour deal is a classic beer “2 x 1” and you won’t want to miss ordering from the extensive burger menu. We know, craft beer and burger joints are a dime a dozen in Buenos Aires, but this is a great spot to enjoy a slightly more polished ambiance while noshing on some tasty treats.

What #Macrisis? Enjoy a pint of craft beer for AR $100, and occasional special deals on the menu for every game, which will be screened in HD and with surround sound, which is basically like being in Brazil without having to speak Portuñol. Growlers has more than 100 craft beers on tap across its three locations, meaning you’ll be spoiled for choice. If you get hungry, you’ve got the classics like burgers, mozzarella sticks, and more. Celiacs, fret not: gluten-free options are available.

Prinston

Hey, we know not everything takes place within the limits of Capital Federal. For those of you closer to Zona Oeste, you’re in luck! Guess the result of the game correctly this Saturday, (hint: Argentina will win), and become eligible to be chosen as one of three winners on Sunday.  The prize: lots (and lots) of free craft beer for the following week. The deal applies for both of Prinston’s locations. There will also be happy hour from 5:30 – 7:30 PM.

Sullivan’s

Sullivan’s classic Irish pub menu will stay the same during each game, but they’ve promised to have a few special deals coming depending on the night. Some items on the menu to look out for: tater tots, pierogis, tenderloin with bacon, and breaded shrimp bites. You might want to make a reservation quickly, because space is limited and filling up as you read this.

Sushi Pop

Are you ready for a break from so much beer and so many burgers? Well, this promo is for you. At one of Sushi Pop’s seven locations, participate in a “sushi raffle” and place your bets on potential game outcomes- who will score, who will win, etc. Each night, 80 pieces of sushi will be raffled off, meaning you’ll have a belly full of tasty rolls if you play your cards right.

My God, look at that sandwich… Just imagine digging into one of those bad boys while watching a game. Well, good news! At all five of its locations, burger joint Williamsburg will feature an epic deal during each game: 20 percent off its XXL burger menu. Not to mention, there’s the classic 2 x 1 beer promo, because how else will you wash down a burger?
