La Usina del Arte will put on a free concert and poetry reading tonight to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of megastar of Argentine literature, Jorge Luis Borges. The show will be a part of a series of cultural events in the city surrounding the date of the author’s death. He died on June 13th, 1986 in Geneva, Switzerland.
BorgesxBorges+Aznar will feature actress Graciela Borges and singer-songwriter Pedro Aznar, who will perform both readings and sung interpretations of works by some of Argentina’s most famous writers.
Despite sharing a last name, Graciela and Jorge Luis are not technically related (by blood at least). The story of how she acquired the same last name as the writer, however, makes her participation in this concert all the more fitting. Apparently, it was conceded to her by Jorge Luis the very night they met at a dinner party. Graciela was distraught because her father not only did not support her choice to be an actress, but also refused to let her use her own last name in her career. Borges lent it to her under the condition that she would always bring it honor. 30 years later, she is still living up to that promise.
Here are some exciting titles to pick up to rekindle your love for Argentina’s beloved writer after you go to the concert tonight: Ficciones (especially: “The Library of Babel”, “The garden of forking paths”, “Funes the Memorious”) The Aleph and Other Stories, The Book of Sand, The Book of Imaginary Beings, and Dreamtigers.
“When writers die they become books, which is, after all, not too bad an incarnation.”
-Jorge Luis Borges
