Argentine tennis-star Leonardo Mayer and compatriot Juan Mónaco have both progressed to the second round of the Italian Open with victories over Federico Gaio and Dusan Lajovic respectively.
27-year-old Mayer — who recently broke the top 25 in the world rankings — overcame the Italian Gaio 6–3, 6–4 to book a tie with American John Isner in the next round of the clay-surface competition.
Mónaco failed to register a straight-set victory but will need to be at the top of his game should he harbor any hope of progressing past ninth-ranked Swiss Stan Wawrinka in the second phase.
Hot Argentine prospect Diego Schwartzman is yet to get his campaign in Rome underway, and at 22 years of age he’s one of the tournament’s youngest. However, with a ranking of 62 he’s the favorite to go through against the Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.
