The future of the bill rests in the hands of the undecided.

With just over one week before Argentina’s Senate votes on the bill to legalize abortion, the pro-choice and pro-life camps are neck in neck, with the future outcome resting in the hands of the as of yet unconfirmed Senators.

The Justice and Penal Issues, Constitutional Issues, and Health Commissions have now closed and with just eight days before the final vote, both supporters and detractors are scrambling to convince unconfirmed voters, with the final result looking extremely close. Even though the Kirchnerite block Frente para la Victoria-PJ has declared to be in favor of the proposed law almost in its entirety, divisions in the Peronist block and an almost unanimous rejection of the bill by Cambiemos deputies means that as we move ever closer to the vote on August 8th, the bill is looking increasingly uncertain to pass.

Those in favor of the bill, in particular, are endeavoring to make it more attractive. All of the Senators from the Córdoba province have not yet confirmed their positions, but have shown themselves to be open to voting in favor should several key modifications be made to ‘soften’ it. These changes are namely the reduction of the time limit from 14 to 12 weeks’ gestation, allowing institutional conscientious objection, and eliminating punishment for medical professionals who refuse to provide abortions.

The list below shows the current positions of Senators, as of Tuesday, July 31st. This article will be updated as soon as new information becomes available.
