The cultural heritage of Argentina is as complex and multi-layered as its natural heritage. From archaeological sites to estancias, theaters to museums, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to partaking in these activities, above all in Buenos Aires. Even though we are lucky enough to have access to such a wealth of culture and history, we can all be guilty of leaving these excursions to the tourists, missing out on these diverse alternatives in favor of settling down at home to give “Edha” yet another chance (spoiler alert: it’s still terrible).
This weekend, all that can change with the second edition of the Día Nacional de los Monumentos. Organized by the National Commission of Monuments, Places, and Historical Properties from the Ministry of Culture, this event aims to encourage Argentines (and visitors alike) to get closer to their legacy by learning about it, enjoying it, and celebrating all that their country has to offer.
This year’s celebrations take place on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 all around the country, showcasing each region’s distinct culture and identity. Below, our highlights of what’s on in Buenos Aires; the rest of the activities going on can be found here.
The Museo Mitre will host DOS PESOS: Feria de talleres e intervenciones artísticas, a fair which will allow you to flex your creative muscles in a range of workshops, from printmaking to fanzines. The street in front of the museum and some rooms in the house will become a “laboratory of artistic experimentation” as we prepare to bid a final farewell to the 2 peso note and will be an opportunity to reflect on national symbols. There will also be various talks taking place, including discussions on the conservation of paper money, and the event will close with live funk music. Naturally.
Museo Mitre | Saturday, May 12, 2PM – 5PM | San Martín 336, Buenos Aires
The Museum is going on a day trip. Join this guided tour of Parque Lezama, led by staff from the National History Museum. This is an opportunity to learn about the natural surroundings of the museum, as well as landmarks of its history. Also, for four to five-year-olds, there will be a kermés de juegos on Sunday, a space to enjoy an afternoon of games and activities to enter in to contact with objects and stories from the colonial era. Families can play Historical Bingo, Memory Games, and many more to learn about Argentina’s history through fun.
Museo Histórico Nacional | Saturday, May 12 at 3PM; Sunday, May 13 at 3:30PM | Defensa 1600, Buenos Aires | Cancelled in the event of rain

The Museo Casa de Ricardo Rojas is shedding light on the behind-the-scenes work that goes in to maintaining artefacts and paintings. Adults can enjoy a Restoration Workshop, led by the museum’s Conservation Department, which will share the processes and basic concepts of restoring pieces of national heritage. Children over the age of eight are invited to a workshop looking and casts and molds, a creative way to discover the secrets of museum curators. This is an unusual and unique opportunity to explore the house and share secrets, experiences and work with the professionals who make up the museum’s staff.

This year would have marked Eva Perón’s 99th birthday, and so as part of the celebrations the Museo Evita is also joining in the fun. In addition to the museum’s usual installations, there will be guided tours and recorridos led by the museum’s staff. In an effort to get children involved, there will be a Patrimoniarte workshop; kids can reflect on national heritage and nation-building through their observation of the city, because as we all know, the best kind of fun is educational. The workshop requires you to sign up in advance, so book your places by emailing email@example.com.
