An explosion on the 12th floor of the Clínicas Hospital in Recoleta at noon today has left three wounded and a significant amount of material destroyed.
According to hospital spokespeople, the explosion occurred in an autoclave reserved for sterilizing surgery equipment in which hospital employees are not assigned to work.
“We want to assure you that [the three wounded] are fine and say that it wasn’t necessary to evacuate the patients from the hospital,”
Alberto Crescenti, director of the Medical Attention and Emergencies System (SAME), said.
Medical personnel and hospital patients evacuated themselves and stood outside the building on Córdoba Avenue while firefighters and police arrived to investigate.
Authorities have repudiated an initial theory claiming the explosion was caused by elevators falling in their shafts.
There are currently public transportation delays in the area.
