There’s no place like *shows* for the holidays. With only a few days left in the year and even fewer until Noche Buena, here are three nights worth of great shows to get your live music fix before grinning through a leisurely Christmas dinner with your beloved suegro and his extensive Luis Miguel discography. Wine helps.
ps. This is the last edition of The Setlist until 2017! Thanks for all the clicks, reads, shares, comments, and trolling, it’s been just swell. See you all on the other side.

Once Mosquito junto a La Paloma de Fidel en Kirie San Telmo
English-singing indie pop band Once Mosquito has only one release to their name thus far, but it’s an impressive one. Recorded in an old house in the countryside using mattresses to isolate instruments, Stud is arresting for both frontman Igna Parra’s extremely listenable voice as well as the immediate 60’s-style warmth and depth of sound. They’re joined for the night by indie folk band La Paloma de Fidel.
8 PM | ARS $100 | Kirie Music Club | Boliva 813 | San Telmo
Fantasmagoria, the 70s-inspired, psych-rock project of former Fun People guitarist Gori returns to the stage to present their new LP “El Mago Mandrax.” Joining them for the celebration is the funk and soul-inspired Dizzy Espeche Trio and Cordoba-natives “Charlie Scelso and a Rock and Roll Band” (yes, that’s really what they call themselves).
9 PM | ARS $100 | El Emergente Almagro | Francisco Acuña de Figueroa 1030 | Almagro
Thursday | December 22
An old workshop turned clandestine venue in the heart of Chacarita, Roseti is the perfect place to get a head start on your weekend. This Thursday night you can look forward to a triple lineup: Nico Canedo y Los Entusiastas (indie pop unafraid of sumptuous string arrangements and playful synth lines ) Placard (eclectic indie rock band with a touch of The B-52’s), and Nahuel Briones + Orquesta Pera Reflexiva (piano-heavy, orchestral folktronica).
8:30 PM | ARS $90 | Roseti | Roseti 722 | Chacarita
Tomás Amante & The Lover Trotters will be serving the soloist’s soulful folk pop with a touch of Spinneta at times in a live band format this Thursday. Joining them for the penultimate Noche Mandrax of the year is alt rock band Superchería.
11 PM | ARS $50 | Makena Cantina Club | Fitz Roy 1519 | Palermo
Friday | December 23
Local musician favorite Espacio Cultural Mi Casa hosts the last edition of the spacey concert series Marte Ataca, this time with a lineup that’s one for the books. Playing Friday are electro-kitsch duo Buba Luma, long-running favorite of this column Las Piñas, the Mac deMarco-esque Gativideo and the unapologetically loud noise rock band El Sur (Bandcamp tagline: “We make a lot of noise”).
10:30 PM | AR $60 | Espacio Cultural Mi Casa | Aguero 787| Abasto
Prefer a quieter night out? Look no further than this female folk artist double header at El Universal, featuring Loli Molina (sweet and mild folk singer first discovered by Juana Molina) and Lucy Patané (multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer who often dabbles in cumbia and folktronica).
