River Plate’s attempt to defend its Copa Libertadores crown ended yesterday after a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Ecuadorian team Independiente del Valle.
Despite winning 1-0 on the night thanks to Lucas Alario’s goal, River was unable to overcome the two goal deficit despite dominating possession and proceeding on the whole.
Alario’s 78th minute goal was nothing less than River deserved after raining in shots on the Ecuadorians’ goal throughout.
Social media naturally lost it.

“I can’t believe River went out to Independiente del Valle.”
Boludo river es el ejemplo de tener mala leche en un partido, el arquero de independiente habra sacado facil 10 pelotas ya

“Fuckin’ River, such bad luck. The Independiente keeper has had to deal with 10 easy balls.”
QUE BIEN ESTA JUGANDO RIVER, FALTAN LOS GOLES NO MAS LA PUTA MADRE

“River’s played so well. All it’s missed is the goals, for fuck’s sake!”
All very fair comments – the highlights reel is basically the goalkeeper either getting lucky or having a shot go straight at him, but with Independiente as the overwhelming underdogs when the teams got drawn you have to hold your hands up.
Boca faces Cerro Porteño tonight, the reverse of the previous fixture in Paraguay where barras bravas ran riot last week. Boca won that game 2-1, and will certainly be confident of sealing its place in the next round. Having said that, it did lose to Argentinos Juniors at the weekend, so maybe confidence isn’t as high as it perhaps should be.
