In a bid to boost consumer spending, the government scheme to pay for items in twelve instalments ‘Ahora 12’ will be getting an upgrade in the new year to ‘Ahora 18’ – as announced this morning by the Secretary Internal Commerce. The plan will allow whoever holds one of these credits cards to buy products made in Argentina in 12 or 18 fixed payments on purchases made on Thursdays through Sundays.

As of December 1st, and up through to March 31st 2017, both ‘Ahora 12’ and ‘Ahora 18’ will be available at selected stores. However, as the program incorporates four new categories into the previously existing parameters, several other stores are expected to join.

The plan that was initially introduced in 2014 by the Kirchner government, was extended last year and is hoped to aid the government with their 2017 plans to lower inflation and taxes.

Just in time for the holidays, the ruling — published today in the official bulletin — provides  more tourism-related offers; such as plane and long-distance bus tickets, car rentals, various accommodation options (hotels etc.), tourist packages and other leisure activities such as guided tours and outings. It’s important to keep in mind that the program is valid only within Argentina, and that booking and payment must be organised (again) between Thursdays and Sundays.

Personal computers, laptops and tablets are also interesting new additions. The inclusion of these devices forms part of the current government’s plan to reduce the access gap that separates Argentina from the rest of the world when it comes to technology. What’s more, the scheme will also bring in supermarkets and general stores such as Jumbo, Carrefour and Coto to “Ahora 18”, but solely as techno sellers.

Car parts, construction materials and motorcycles (up to ARS $50,000) are also joining the party. Altogether, there are 18 different product categories and thousands of stores subscribing across the country.
