‘El Marginal’, which began airing in 2016, is undoubtedly one of Argentina’s most successful and popular TV series of all time and ever since hitting Netflix, it has only increased in global popularity.

Now it seems US producers have sized up that success, and want a piece of the prison drama for themselves. For those unfamiliar with the Argentine series, the basic plot is an ex – Argentine cop is sent to jail, to find a judge’s kidnapped daughter. The judge has supposedly shammed the kidnappers out of US $3 million, and unsurprisingly they want it back, and using some rather nasty tactics, have taken his daughter as hostage. The series takes viewers into a dark, underground criminal world of corruption, that in reality you are pleased to only be viewing through your TV screen. If you ask me, it’s golden Netflix viewing that’s right up there with Narcos.

Talking of gold, it was in fact ‘El Marginal’ that took away the highly acclaimed golden Martín Fierro award (Argentina’s equivalent of the Emmys / Baftas) last year. So really if you haven’t yet seen it, start now, at least whilst you’re still a little ahead of the game before everyone is hooked on the new U.S version. The show has been so popular that even a prequel was announced, at the end of last year (sadly we’ll have to wait until it reaches Netflix screens, as for now it’s only on channel 7).

The new series, named ‘El Recluso’ with a similar, but of course, adapted plot to ‘El Marginal’ also deals with Mexican and U.S border relations, with locations shot in Mexico City, as well as on the border.  We see ex – marine, Mendoza enter a maximum-security border prison whose outcome is similar to that of ex-cop Palacios in the original. We can’t wait for this one.

Argentine – American actor Ignacio Serricchio will star as the lead ex – marine infiltrating the prison whilst Mexican actress Ana Claudia Talancón is cast in the equivalent leading role of Martina Gusmán in ‘El Marginal’. Notably much of the Argentine production team who worked on El Marginal will be following the show over to it’s remake as El Recluso. Proving just how well they did the original.

This is not the first time that a popular Argentine TV series has been adapted. Much loved and popular Argentine series ‘Los Simuladores’ has been reproduced many times by Hispanic nations Chile, Mexico, Spain as well as non- Hispanic Russia. It seems Argentina has a knack for producing addictive Netflix series that the World wants to replicate.

Already a year into production, we can expect all thirteen new episodes to start hitting screens late this March 2018. Telemundo, a US owned Hispanic TV Production Company owns rights, and whilst they say the full series will be available on a number of platforms, it is unconfirmed whether ‘El Recluso’ will hit Netflix screens soon. We can only hope so.
