The latest update of Whatsapp has provoked backlash among Argentines. No, the absence of fernet y cola among the drink icons is not to blame. This more recent tiff has a far more political motivation to it – The Malvinas. Specifically, the news that Whatsapp has included the internationally recognized flag for the islands among its emoji flag options.

As a result of an ongoing diplomatic disagreement over who should oversee the islands, Argentina does not recognize the flag and many are taking its inclusion in the emoji collection as an affront to their claim to the archipelago.

Julio Cobos, the senator from Mendoza, heavily criticized the Whatsapp update and started a petition rejecting the use of the flag as it “does not recognize our legitimate right to the Malvinas islands”, he explained in a statement.

Presenter of Showmatch, Marcelo —, is among one of several Argentines who responded angrily to the news on twitter.

“Is it true that Whatsapp used the flag of the Falkland Islands? THE ISLANDS ARE ARGENTINE!” The TV host took to Twitter to express his disbelief at the update

‘The Malvinas are Argentine, now and forever’.

Other users also took to twitter to complain about the update

‘HOW DISGUSTING THAT WHATSAPP INCLUDED THE FALKLANDS FLAG FOR THE MALVINAS’ wrote one outraged twitter user.

Whatsapp has made no official response to complaints.
